P2P vs A2P Messaging

Let's dive into what the differences are

Written by Juan

In the world of SMS marketing, there are two main types of messaging: A2P (Application-to-Person) and P2P (Person-to-Person). Understanding the difference between the two is helpful in understanding how TxtCart works and why it stands out.

What is A2P Messaging?

A2P (Application-to-Person) messaging refers to messages sent from a software application to a person. This is the most common type of SMS marketing, used for automated campaigns, promotions, and notifications.

A2P messaging in the US is regulated by the CTIA and requires strict opt-in consent from recipients, clear sender identification, and must be sent through registered numbers such as toll-free numbers or 10DLC.

What is P2P Messaging?

P2P (Person-to-Person) messaging refers to messages exchanged between two individuals, much like a regular text conversation.

While P2P messaging still falls under regulations like the TCPA, it is generally held to a less stringent standard when it comes to opt-in requirements, since the nature of the conversation is more personal and conversational.

In TxtCart 4.0, P2P messaging happens in two ways:

  • Conversations tab: When you or a member of your team manually takes control of a conversation and replies directly to a customer through the Conversations tab, that exchange is treated as P2P messaging.

  • P2P Cart Recovery Add-On: If you've purchased the P2P Cart Recovery Add-On, TxtCart's live agents (real humans), text on your behalf to recover abandoned carts through natural, one-on-one conversations.

How TxtCart Combines Both

TxtCart is a hybrid platform that brings A2P and P2P messaging together. This means we leverage automation and AI alongside real human interaction to deliver a more natural and effective customer experience.

Some platforms rely exclusively on AI, others use only human agents, TxtCart brings both together for an approach that is more engaging, more personal, and more effective.
