Creating Audience Segments

Build dynamic audience segments from subscriber criteria, AND/OR rule logic, Segment Size, and how to create or rename one.

Written by Juan

Build dynamic segments that automatically update as subscribers meet your criteria, using a single rule or multiple rules combined with AND and OR conditions.

What are segments?

A segment is a dynamic group of subscribers based on properties you define, like customers who purchased in the last 30 days or subscribers who opted in at checkout. Segments let you organize your audience into targeted groups for more personalized messaging.

Segments are different from lists. A list is a static group of profiles, such as SMS subscribers from a signup form or an import, and it only changes when you add or remove people. A segment updates automatically: subscribers join it as soon as they meet your criteria and drop out once they no longer do, so you never have to rebuild it by hand.

How segments work

Who a segment includes by default

By default, every segment starts from All Promotional Subscribers, meaning subscribers who have opted in to receive promotional messages. You'll see this shown as the Segment Size before any criteria are added. The criteria you add then narrow that group down.

You can override this default and send to every subscriber on your list, including subscribers who only opted in to transactional messages.

Important: We recommend consulting your compliance or legal advisor before choosing to send to Transactional subscribers. Sending promotional content to subscribers who haven't opted in to marketing messages can create compliance risk for your store.

Segment criteria

Each rule in a segment is built from three parts: a Segment Criteria, an Operator, and a Value. All criteria are based on the subscriber, and the operators available depend on the criteria you choose. Some criteria, like tags and Is a customer, don't have an operator, so you only select a value.

Combining rules with AND and OR

You can build a segment from a single rule or combine as many rules as you need. There's no limit on the number of rules or filters in a segment.

+ Add Rule adds an OR condition. The new rule appears in the same box, and a subscriber only needs to match one of the rules in that box to be included. For example, Total spent greater than 0 OR Tagged with UNENGAGED includes subscribers who match either one.

+ Add Filter (Optional) adds an AND condition. It creates a new box below the first one, and a subscriber has to match both boxes to be included. For example, Total spent greater than 0 AND Opt-in source equals Checkout only includes subscribers who have spent money and also opted in at checkout.

You can mix both. Each filter box can hold its own OR rules, and every box is joined to the others with AND, so you can build segments like "(rule A OR rule B) AND (rule C OR rule D)."

Segment Size

Segment Size, shown below the segment name, is the estimated number of subscribers in the segment. It updates automatically as you add or change rules, and the segment keeps updating after it's saved as subscribers start or stop meeting your criteria.

Note: Not every subscriber has a customer record in Shopify. How subscribers were acquired affects this: for example, subscribers imported from a list may not have a Shopify customer record, while subscribers collected through your checkout will. TxtCart cross-references the subscribers on your SMS list with your Shopify customer records, but your TxtCart segment count may still differ from the same segment pulled directly from Shopify.

How to create a segment

  1. Go to List & Segments and click the + Create New button on the right side of the page. In the window that opens, click Create Segment.

  2. Enter a name for your segment in the Name this segment field, then click Next: Add Criteria.

  3. Under Segment Criteria, click Select a criteria and choose what you want to filter by. Then choose an operator under Operator, if the criteria has one, and enter or select a value under Value.

  4. To add an OR condition, click + Add Rule and set up the new rule the same way. To add an AND condition, click + Add Filter (Optional) and set up the rule in the new box. To remove a rule, click the trash can icon next to it.

  5. Check the Segment Size at the top of the window to see roughly how many subscribers match, then click Save. Your new segment appears on the List & Segments screen.

Tip: Give each segment a name that describes who's in it, like "Repeat buyers, checkout opt-in," so it's easy to find on the List & Segments screen when you're setting up a send.

Renaming a segment

To change a segment's name, click the pencil icon next to the segment name at the top of the segment window, type the new name, and click Save.
